About: Melissa Ma Xuan Zi 马瑄紫 or better known as Ma Nuo 马诺 is a model from Beijing that became an overnight sensation after her bold and sharp comments as a guest on the Jiangsu TV reality dating programme, "Fei Cheng Wu Rao" (If You’re the One) 非诚勿扰. Ma Nuo has acquired something of a material girl image after she made remarks that some people considered too outspoken and glamorized money and wealth while she shunned off poor people.
In the show, she haughtily rejected an offer from a male contestant to take a ride on his bike. "I'd rather cry in a BMW car than to laugh on the backseat of a bicycle," Ma Nuo told her suitor with a giggle. This televised smackdown swept the Internet and made an instant celebrity of Ma Nuo, who left the show without a match but has since entertained numerous television offers and become one of the most talked-about women in China.
Combined with her vulgar behaviour scandal whereby Ma Nuo dashed out during one of the video recording programme after having heated arguments with the other girls. The entire fiasco was recorded down by the video director and made its way to the Internet.
In May 20, 2010, China Netizens posted a 1 hour and 58 minutes AV video with the actress in it resembling Ma Nuo. Rumors were spreading like wild fire across the Internet linking it to Ma Nuo. It was an obvious Japanese AV video and they found out later that the actress in it was actually Aya Koizumi (小泉彩). But they certainly look alike in the video. With all these scandals and fake news, Ma Nuo was the center of attention in China during that period.
Later in June 13, 2010, Ma Nuo broke into tears and apologized to the audience during a TV show explaining that she wasn't a material girl in real life. After graduation, Ma Nuo wanted to gain popularity via TV by joining "Fei Cheng Wu Rao" TV reality dating programme. According to her, she was used to by the crews of the TV programme to make it more entertaining.
Was it real? Whatever it was, "Ma Nuo's phenomenon" is a true reflection of the current society. They have grown up in a society that is quickly accumulating material wealth. They are snobbish. They worship money, cars and houses because the highly developing economy has made them do so. So, does Ma Nuo speaks for herself? No, her opinion resonates with the youth.
